Bucs GM talked to Brady about drafting QB

Tom Brady, 43, is coming off his first season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning his seventh Super Bowl title.

The quarterback previously mentioned his desire to play until 45, and doesn’t appear to show any signs of slowing down. Yet, the Buccaneers could have found Brady's heir apparent in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Florida quarterback Kyle Trask with the final pick of the second round.

General manager Jason Licht ran the idea of drafting a passer by Brady to gauge his interest. "Tom's the ultimate team guy, and I don't think he's worried about anybody taking his job," Licht said, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine. "He was totally fine. He understands. He wants what's best for the team. So Tom's gonna play as long as Tom wants to play. He's earned that right."

Tampa Bay signed Brady to an extension this offseason that could keep him with the franchise for another two seasons.

The Bucs brass liked Trask so much they considered taking him in the first round. However, the franchise drafted Washington pass-rusher Joe Tryon instead.

Trask threw for 4,283 yards and a SEC-record 43 touchdowns in just 12 games last season.

"They definitely have a great system going on there in Tampa Bay," Trask said. "The opportunity to learn (from) one of the greats I watched growing up, that's been one of my favorites - to have that opportunity is truly remarkable."
