Report: Bears' Robinson, Buccaneers' Godwin unlikely to get long-term deals
Two star receivers appear set to play on the franchise tag this season.
Chicago Bears wideout Allen Robinson and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Chris Godwin aren't expected to sign long-term contract extensions before the July 15 deadline, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.
The Bears and Robinson have had "no substantive talks" in months, added Pelissero.
Both players have signed their one-year tenders and are expected to report to training camp. Robinson is due $17.98 million on the franchise tag, while Godwin will earn $15.99 million.
Robinson has been the focal point of Chicago's offense over the last two years. He has back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns and notched 1,250 yards and six touchdowns in 2020.
Though Robinson was vocal about his desire to avoid the franchise tag, Pelissero notes the 27-year-old is confident he can cash in next offseason. The pass-catcher will be working with two new quarterbacks in Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields.
Godwin, meanwhile, is coming off another strong season for the Buccaneers. The 25-year-old's receiving yards dropped from 1,333 in 2019 to 840 after he missed four games due to injury, but he racked up 232 yards during Tampa Bay's Super Bowl run.
The Buccaneers managed to retain their entire championship core this offseason. In addition to tagging Godwin, the team re-signed linebacker Lavonte David, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and tight end Rob Gronkowski, among others.
