Franchise-tagged safety Marcus Maye withdrew his contract proposal to the New York Jets after failing to hear back from the team, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Maye and the Jets aren't expected to strike an extension by the July 15 deadline.

Publicly, the Jets have said they are "relentlessly" trying to sign Maye long term. However, negotiations have reportedly been trending in the wrong direction for weeks.

Maye is in line to earn $10.6 million on the franchise tag. The Jets offered him a deal worth about 20% less per year, which is significantly less than other clubs were prepared to give him in free agency, a source told Rapoport.

Maye posted a career-high 88 tackles to go with two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two sacks last year. He was one of the few standouts New York had on either side of the ball.

The Jets were involved in a similar saga with another safety last year, as Jamal Adams allegedly waited six months to receive an extension proposal before he requested a trade. New York wound up dealing the former All-Pro defender to the Seattle Seahawks.
