San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has come to the realization that he can't keep rookie quarterback Trey Lance on the bench this season.

"Trey's going to play for us this year. I know you guys are all running to Twitter on that," Shanahan said Friday, according to NFL.com's Chase Goodbread.

"Situationally, he's going to get plays. That doesn't mean that he's going to be the starter or anything, but he's going to get plays, and you've got to prepare him for that every way possible."

Lance, the No. 3 pick in this year's draft, is hoping to challenge Jimmy Garoppolo for the starting role, but general manager John Lynch has said the veteran Garoppolo is having his best training camp since he joined the 49ers.

All-Pro tackle Trent Williams agrees with his GM, telling KNBR's "Murph and Mac" that while Lance is an "outstanding talent," there isn't a genuine quarterback competition just yet.
