Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell called himself an "asshole" for cutting long snapper Don Muhlbach on his 40th birthday.
"There's no way to sugarcoat that," he told reporters Thursday, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "I'm an asshole. That's about the best way to put it, and I hate it. There's no way around it really, but ultimately that falls on me. It's my fault. Don's a hell of a dude. It sucks."
Detroit released Muhlbach on Tuesday, ending his tenure with the team after 17 seasons. He played in 260 games for the Lions, the second-most in franchise history.
Campbell was vague on the reasoning for the move when asked about it two days ago, saying only that "it was time."
