Report: Malcolm Butler dealing with personal matter, considering retirement

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Malcolm Butler is dealing with a personal matter and considering retirement, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

"He is going through a personal situation right now, and part of that situation led him to be away from the facility within the last week for a period of time, and he is still trying to work his way through that. Right now, retirement or stepping away from the game is on the table for Malcolm Butler," Garafolo said Monday on "NFL Total Access."

The 31-year-old is best known for his role as the Super Bowl hero for the New England Patriots in 2015 when he intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line to preserve a victory for the Pats.

Butler signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals in March worth up to $6 million after spending three seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

The seven-year vet was expected to replace Patrick Peterson as a starting corner opposite Byron Murphy for Arizona this season.
