Cowboys' McCarthy mum on Newton rumors: 'Very excited' about QB group
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy isn't getting drawn into Cam Newton rumors.
When asked Thursday about reports that his team was considering adding Newton as Dak Prescott's backup, McCarthy lauded his current crop of quarterbacks.
"I think (Newton) has a ton of football left," said McCarthy, according to USA Today's Jori Epstein. "We're very excited about the group we have."
The New England Patriots surprisingly released Newton on Tuesday and handed the starting job to first-round rookie Mac Jones.
Dallas has an inexperienced quarterback room behind Prescott, who is returning from a season-ending ankle injury and is also nursing a shoulder issue.
The Cowboys kept Cooper Rush as their No. 2 quarterback on cutdown day before claiming Will Grier off waivers Wednesday. Rush has just three career passes, while Grier made his two career starts in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers.
Newton struggled in his lone season starting for the Patriots, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The veteran threw for 2,657 yards and a career-low eight touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He also had 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground.
