Frank Gore turned down NFL offers to focus on boxing training
Frank Gore has declined interest from NFL teams this year to focus on a career shift to boxing, he told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Although the legendary running back says he hasn't decided if he wants to play football again, he isn't ruling out a return just yet.
"I've been training for both - football and boxing," Gore said. "I've always loved boxing, so that's what I've been doing. And we're trying to make a fight happen. If we do that, you'll see me in the ring."
The veteran declined to name the teams that have inquired about his services.
Gore, who's spent the last five weeks doing extensive fight workouts, has a high-profile bout in the works, a source told Rapoport.
"I just fell in love with how hard it is," Gore said. "I felt like, 'Man, I couldn't fight.' And I always like a challenge. So, I kept doing it and doing it, and I saw myself getting better and better."
The 38-year-old played for the New York Jets last season and moved into third place on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 16,000 yards. Gore trails only Emmitt Smith (18,355) and Walter Payton (16,726).
Gore racked up nine 1,000-yard seasons during 16 years in the league. The five-time Pro Bowler started his career with the San Francisco 49ers before stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and the Jets.
