Report: Patriots' Jonathan Jones to have season-ending shoulder surgery
New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Jones sat out Sunday's win over the New York Jets after appearing in the first six games of the season. The 28-year-old played 54% of New England's defensive snaps through the first six weeks and served as the team's top cover man in the slot.
The Patriots began the season with plenty of depth in the secondary, but they now find themselves thin after reportedly losing Jones and trading Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers. J.C. Jackson and Jalen Mills sit atop the depth chart, with less established options such as Joejuan Williams, Myles Bryant, and Shaun Wade behind them.
Jones, who stood out on special teams early in his career with New England before carving out a consistent role on defense, posted 18 tackles and one interception in 2021. The sixth-year pro missed only one game over his first five NFL seasons.
