NFL returns to enhanced COVID rules, relaxes return-to-play requirements
The NFL updated its COVID-19 guidelines Thursday following a league-wide increase in cases, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The league is relaxing the return-to-play guidelines in order to make it easier for vaccinated and asymptomatic players to be activated following a positive test.
Teams whose rosters have been severely impacted by recent outbreaks, such as the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Football Team, could get players back for Week 15 as a result of the change, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano.
Vaccinated players who tested positive for COVID-19 previously required two negative test results 24 hours apart to be cleared to practice and play.
Now, vaccinated and asymptomatic players can be cleared with two negative test results - from two PCR tests, two rapid tests, or one of each, both of which can be taken the day after the positive result, added Graziano.
The rules governing unvaccinated players haven't changed: They still have to stay away from the team for 10 days before they're eligible to return.
Moreover, all teams, effective immediately, are being placed in intensive protocols until the conclusion of Week 15. Mask requirements, social distancing measures, and restrictions on in-person meetings will be reintroduced.
"All of these changes are grounded in our data and science-backed approach, with safety our No. 1 goal for the entire NFL community," the league said.
The NFL also encouraged players to get COVID-19 booster shots but has no current plans to mandate them.
