Report: Giants set to hire Martindale as new DC
The New York Giants are finalizing a deal to hire Don "Wink" Martindale as their new defensive coordinator, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Martindale, the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, is widely viewed as one of the NFL's best defensive minds. The Ravens announced they'd be parting ways with the assistant in a surprise move January.
The 58-year-old led Baltimore's defense for four seasons after being promoted from linebackers coach in 2018.
The unit ranked in the top three in scoring defense in each of Martindale's first three seasons before a significant regression in 2021 amid a slew of injuries.
New Giants head coach Brian Daboll was interested in retaining Patrick Graham, last season's defensive coordinator. However, Graham opted to take the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Martindale reportedly beat out the likes of Sean Desai and Jim Schwartz to join New York's staff.
