Report: Rodgers, Packers in good place ahead of decision on future

The relationship between quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers appears to be in a better spot than it has been in quite a long time, and many involved hope he will choose to return, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

No one besides the four-time All-Pro passer knows for sure what he will do, and no one intends to rush him on a decision.

Rodgers echoed those sentiments while collecting his fourth MVP award this past week at the NFL Honors ceremony, stating that he plans to take the next few weeks to make a choice.

"I've had good conversations with Green Bay," Rodgers said. "And I'll do some contemplating and make a decision here pretty quick."

Rodgers' stance is a complete turnaround from last year when he questioned the direction and decision-making of the franchise. He also made public his distrust and frustration with the Packers front office before holding out of the team's offseason workouts and returning to the squad in training camp.

After holding out for much of the last offseason, Rodgers negotiated a restructured contract with Green Bay that cut off the final year of his pact and voided it after the franchise tag window. The new deal would make the 38-year-old a free agent. There's also a verbal agreement between Rogers and the club to discuss a possible trade to a mutually agreed upon destination.

If Rodgers decides to remain with the Packers, he will likely need to renegotiate his contract once again. Green Bay is willing to make Rodgers the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL on a per-year basis, but that would likely come in the form of a short-term deal with voidable years on the back end to provide cap flexibility. The Packers are likely to offer a two-year pact worth upwards of $45 million annually, according to Rapoport.

Green Bay is in a $50 million deficit regarding its current salary cap situation, according to Over The Cap. Wide receiver Davante Adams and linebacker De'Vondre Campbell are among players set to hit free agency this offseason.
