Brian Griese is departing the Monday Night Football broadcast booth to take over as the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Seth Wickersham.

The former NFL quarterback spent the last two seasons as an analyst on ESPN's prime time games. He commentated alongside play-by-play man Steve Levy and fellow analyst Louis Riddick.

Griese's exit comes amid news that ESPN is planning to hire Hall of Fame quarterback and veteran broadcaster Troy Aikman as its new lead analyst for Monday Night Football. The network is reportedly trying to get Joe Buck, Aikman's broadcast partner at Fox, to join him for play-by-play.

Griese will join a staff that needed to replace Rich Scangarello, who recently took the offensive coordinator job at Kentucky. The 46-year-old played in the NFL from 1998-08 and made the Pro Bowl in 2000 as a member of the Denver Broncos.

Griese broadcasted NCAA football games for several seasons before ESPN promoted him to work on Monday Night Football.
