Steelers pick up Trubisky on reported 2-year contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed their quarterback uncertainty on the opening day of free agency, agreeing to a two-year deal with Mitchell Trubisky, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Trubisky will sign a $14.25-million pact that's worth up to $27 million with incentives, reports Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The former No. 2 overall pick will head to the Steel City following a one-year stay with the Buffalo Bills, where he backed up Josh Allen.

"I am beyond excited and blessed for the opportunity to be part of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization," Trubisky told ESPN's Adam Schefter via text. "I have tremendous respect for the Rooney family and Coach (Mike) Tomlin. They have built one of the best rosters in football, and I can't wait to contribute and help this team to continue their success."

Pittsburgh entered the offseason looking for a signal-caller to replace the retired Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers were involved in the Jimmy Garoppolo sweepstakes before inking Trubisky, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Trubisky started 50 games over his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, but he never developed into the passer the team envisioned. The North Carolina product threw 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions with the Bears, who declined his fifth-year option and eventually let him sign with the Bills.

Despite his shortcomings in Chicago, Trubisky reportedly generated buzz ahead of free agency and was expected to land in a situation where he could compete for a starting job.

The 27-year-old chose the Steelers over the New York Giants, who have Daniel Jones going into his pivotal fourth season.

Trubisky will join a Steelers quarterbacks room that also has Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. Pittsburgh went 9-7-1 last season, making the playoffs for the second straight year.
