Mayfield requests trade from Browns: 'Relationship is too far gone to mend'
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield requested a trade following the team's reported failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson, Mayfield told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"It’s in the mutual interest of both sides for us to move on," Mayfield said. "The relationship is too far gone to mend. It's in the best interests of both sides to move on."
However, the Browns don't intend to honor Mayfield's request to leave, a source told ESPN's Jake Trotter.
Cleveland reportedly met with Watson on Tuesday but was apparently informed Thursday that the team is now out of the running for his services.
Mayfield signaled his time in Cleveland could be coming to a close on Tuesday, posting a message thanking Browns fans.
The 26-year-old has "strong interest" in joining the Indianapolis Colts, a source told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The Colts are in need of a quarterback after trading Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks have discussed acquiring Mayfield, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. The Seahawks are also in the market for a new signal-caller after sending Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.
The AFC North club selected Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Mayfield led the Browns to their first playoff win since 1994 during the 2020 campaign, but he struggled for most of last season while dealing with a shoulder injury. Cleveland missed the playoffs and finished with an 8-9 record.
