Commanders take Sam Howell to open 5th round
The Washington Commanders selected North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, No. 144 overall.
Howell was the sixth quarterback selected, going after Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, Matt Corral, and Bailey Zappe.
The North Carolina product tossed 24 touchdowns to nine interceptions in 2021. It was a step down from his sophomore campaign in 2020 when he threw for 30 touchdowns and 3,586 yards.
Washington has been looking for stability at the quarterback position in recent years. They had three different quarterbacks start last season, with Taylor Heinicke leading the way with a 7-8 record.
The Commanders went out and acquired Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason. Wentz joined the Colts last offseason but his stint lasted only one year following a late-season collapse.
Howell will likely start the year behind Wentz and could challenge Heinicke for the top backup position.
Scouting profile: Sam Howell
School | Height | Weight | 40 time |
---|---|---|---|
North Carolina | 6'1 | 218 | DNP |
Howell's numbers took a hit in 2021. However, he was without several key players who'd left for the NFL, including receivers Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome, as well as running backs Javonte Williams and Michael Carter. What Howell lost in passing stats, he made up for with a huge spike in rushing production, tallying 828 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. That's more of a sign he'll find ways to move the ball, rather than an indicator he'll be a prolific runner at the next level. Regardless, Howell has more than enough arm to deliver as a low-level NFL starter with the right pieces around him. He's a fearless downfield thrower whose bold playing style is sure to turn him into a fan favorite.
