Raiders decline 5th-year options for Jacobs, Ferrell, Abram
The Las Vegas Raiders are declining the fifth-year options for Josh Jacobs, Clelin Ferrell, and Johnathan Abram, the team announced Friday.
"We look forward to working with all three players, and we will evaluate each situation individually moving forward," general manager Dave Ziegler said in a statement.
The trio will enter the final year of their rookie contracts in 2022. All three were key acquisitions under former general manager Mike Mayock and head coach Jon Gruden.
The group is set to hit free agency in 2023 following a regime change that now has Josh McDaniels as the new coach and Dave Ziegler as the GM.
Jacobs, 24, seems to be the biggest surprise of the group. The Raiders selected the running back No. 24 overall in the 2019 draft, and he rushed for over 1,000 yards in his first two campaigns. He turned in 872 rushing yards, nine touchdowns, and a career-high 54 receptions for 348 receiving yards last season.
Picking up Jacobs' option would have cost Las Vegas close to $8 million in 2023.
Ferrell, 2019's No. 4 pick, has never matched his draft value through three seasons. The defensive lineman fell out of the rotation and didn't start a game during his 2021 campaign.
The Raiders save about $7.9 million by not picking up Abram's fifth-year option, according to Spotrac. The 25-year-old safety has gradually grown into a starting role after missing most of his rookie season with a shoulder injury. The Mississippi State product racked up 116 tackles, five tackles for loss, and four passes defended last year.
