A.J. Brown praises fellow No. 1 wideout DeVonta Smith
A.J. Brown believes the Philadelphia Eagles are set up for success after pairing him with fellow wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
"In my opinion, Smitty is a wide receiver (No.) 1. ... I expect Smitty to dominate," Brown said during a press conference Friday.
Brown believes the pairing will be mutually beneficial.
"Just taking pressure off each other. And even being on the same side, so you can't really (double-team). That's great having another great wideout beside you," he added.
The expectations are high for both wideouts ahead of the 2022 season. Smith is entering his second NFL campaign after racking up 64 receptions for 916 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner led the Eagles' receiving corps in most statistical categories while averaging 14.3 yards per catch.
Philadelphia acquired Brown in a trade with the Tennessee Titans during the 2022 NFL Draft. The former Pro Bowler is expected to be a reliable passing option for quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Brown, who'll be 25 next season, is aiming to bounce back after injuries limited him to 13 games in 2021. Despite that missed time, the Ole Miss product led the Titans with 63 catches, 869 yards, and five scores. He previously surpassed 1,000 yards in each of his first two NFL seasons.
After trading for Julio Jones, Tennessee expected to get significant production from its pass-catching group last season, but injuries marred his lone campaign with the Titans. Jones was subsequently released in March.
Now a member of the Eagles, Brown relishes the opportunity to headline a receiving group alongside Smith next season. Brown notes that he's provided advice to Smith on "little things" and praised his route-running ability. The newest Eagle feels that Year 2 could be a big step for Smith.
"I think the sky is the limit for Smitty," Brown said.
