Patriots' Jones out vs. Lions, Zappe to make 1st start
New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will miss Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions due to a high ankle sprain, the team announced.
Rookie Bailey Zappe is set to get his first career start. Jones was listed as doubtful after being hurt on the final play of the Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Veteran Brian Hoyer started last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers but suffered a concussion early in the game.
Zappe, a fourth-round pick, played well after replacing Hoyer. The former Western Kentucky standout completed 10 of 15 passes for 99 yards and one touchdown in the 27-24 overtime defeat.
Zappe and Pittsburgh Steelers first-rounder Kenny Pickett will be the first rookie quarterbacks to start this season. Pickett replaced Mitchell Trubisky last week and was subsequently named the permanent starter ahead of Week 5.
