Report: Rams expected to seek Akers trade amid issues over role
The Los Angeles Rams are expected to field trade offers for running back Cam Akers, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Akers "has philosophical and football-related differences with head coach Sean McVay," Rapoport reports.
The running back is expected to garner significant interest, and L.A. will sign off on a deal if it receives satisfactory value, adds Rapoport.
McVay ruled Akers out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers while casting doubt over his future with the team.
"I would say it's more like we're dealing with things internally," said McVay on Friday. "This is kind of unchartered territory and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, we want to keep it internally."
Communication between Akers and McVay has reportedly remained cordial despite their on-field disagreements.
Akers appeared set to be the Rams' running back of the future after an impressive 625-yard rookie season in 2020. However, he tore his Achilles before the 2021 campaign.
Although the 23-year-old made a fast recovery to return for the Rams' postseason run to Super Bowl glory, his standing with the team was affected by two fumbles in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, adds Rapoport.
Akers leads the Rams in rushing yards this season (151) ahead of Darrell Henderson (138), but he is averaging just 3 yards per carry and has only made two receptions.
