Titans fire GM Jon Robinson
The Tennessee Titans fired general manager Jon Robinson, the team announced Tuesday.
Robinson's dismissal comes with the Titans leading the AFC South after recording a 7-5 record through the first 13 weeks of the campaign. It also is just 10 months after the club gave contract extensions to him and head coach Mike Vrabel.
"Since becoming controlling owner in 2015, my goal has been to raise the standard for what is expected in all facets of our organization," owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "I believe we have made significant progress both on and off the field through investments in leadership, personnel, and new ideas.
"This progress includes the core of our business, the football team itself, which is regularly evaluated both by results (wins and losses) and team construction/roster building. I am proud of what we have accomplished in my eight seasons of ownership, but I believe there is more to be done and higher aspirations to be met.
"I want to thank Jon for his dedicated work to set this organization on an upward trajectory, and I wish him and his family the best."
Vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden will lead player personnel for the remainder of the season. Tennessee will begin preliminary work on hiring its new general manager shortly and start a full search once the season ends.
The 46-year-old Robinson was hired in 2016 and given the additional title of executive vice president in 2017. The Titans have made the playoffs in four of Robinson's six seasons at the helm and have never finished with a losing record.
Tennessee has become a consistent playoff contender following the arrival of Vrabel in 2018, winning the division the last two seasons and securing the No. 1 seed in the AFC in 2021.
However, the team has struggled to push to the next level. The top-seeded Titans were one-and-done in the playoffs last season after being upset by the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round.
Moreover, Robinson has been criticized for some recent personnel moves, most notably trading star receiver A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles for a first-round pick on draft night in April. The Eagles blew out the Titans 35-10 last Sunday, with Brown going off for 118 yards and two touchdowns.
Robinson has also struggled to hit on first-round picks in recent years. Offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, who was cut after one season, and cornerback Caleb Farley, who has struggled with injuries to start his career, are among his most prominent misses.
Overall, the Titans went 66-43 in the regular season and 3-4 in the playoffs during Robinson's tenure.
