Report: Jets inquire about Rodgers' availability, Packers open to trade
The New York Jets have inquired about the availability of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Green Bay is willing to part ways with Rodgers if he asks for a trade, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Head coach Robert Saleh said in January the team will be "aggressive as heck" to upgrade the quarterback position. Zach Wilson and Chris Streveler are the only quarterbacks under contract for the 2023 season. Mike White and Joe Flacco are slated to become free agents.
If Rodgers decides he wants to play elsewhere in 2023, he will need to rework his contract for cap purposes to facilitate a trade. Teams have already reached out to the Packers about a possible deal, with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets emerging as possible destinations, according to Pelissero. The Packers have told other clubs it is too early to start negotiations.
Green Bay respects Rodgers' decision-making process on his future as he begins a four-day "darkness retreat" on Monday to weigh his options - whether he'll return or retire.
Rodgers signed a three-year, $150.8-million contract extension last offseason, and the relationship between him and the team has remained positive since inking the deal, according to Pelissero. If the 39-year-old veteran decides to return to Green Bay, the franchise will welcome him back.
The Packers have until May to decide on a fifth-year option for quarterback Jordan Love, their first-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has been Rodgers' backup for the last three seasons.
The 24-year-old filled in for an injured Rodgers in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles, throwing for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Rodgers is set to make $59.5 million in 2023.
