The Detroit Lions are close to finalizing a multiyear contract extension with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The deal is not quite finished but is expected to be completed soon, according to Fowler.

Glenn has had multiple head coaching interview opportunities this offseason with teams like the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts.

The 50-year-old has served as the Lions' defensive play-caller since the 2021-22 campaign. He has worked his way up the coaching ranks after starting as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. The Texas native also spent five seasons as the DB coach for the New Orleans Saints.

Detroit's defense has struggled during the first two seasons under Glenn. The Lions ranked 31st in points allowed in 2021 and only improved to 28th last season while surrendering a league-high 392.4 yards per contest.

The Lions' defense features plenty of young stars expected to be key components in building a strong foundation. Aidan Hutchinson and Malcolm Rodriguez are among the promising talent Glenn has to work with moving forward.

Glenn, a former three-time Pro Bowl cornerback, played 15 years in the league. He had stints with five different clubs: The New York Jets, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New Orleans Saints.
