Report: Falcons expected to sign Heinicke to 2-year contract
The Atlanta Falcons are signing former Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
Heinicke, who turns 30 on Wednesday, agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $20 million, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Atlanta picks up a veteran signal-caller to bolster its passing group. The club released Marcus Mariota last month after just one season, leaving just third-round passer Desmond Ridder and Logan Woodside on the roster.
Heinicke has started 25 games in his career, which includes stints with the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and Commanders. He started nine games during the 2022 campaign, passing for 1,859 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 62.2% completion rate.
The Old Dominion product also started a postseason game for Washington during the 2020 season.
The Commanders ultimately moved on from Heinicke, opting to name Sam Howell their starter moving forward. Heinicke established a 12-11-1 record as a starter in the nation's capital over the course of three seasons with the franchise.
