Jones expects Prescott to be with Cowboys for 'a long time'
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott needs an extension in the near future thanks in large part to a $59.4-million cap hit in 2024 - the final year of his current deal - that ranks second among all NFL players.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knows managing Prescott's contract is vital to the team's success, and he said Tuesday that he's open to negotiating with the quarterback during the season.
"Those types of numbers, especially the big ones, you live with constantly. That's always on your mind," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "There's never a time where it goes away because you've got to make the entire thing fit.
"And so, it's on the mind on a player decision in the middle of the year. It's just a fundamental. We expect Dak to be with us a long time. And, yeah, we'll always (be) working around it with several machinations of numbers that would work."
The Cowboys made the playoffs for the second straight year after again finishing with a 12-5 record. However, the NFC East club did so without Prescott playing his best football.
The veteran signal-caller led the NFL in interceptions with 15 despite only playing in 12 games, while also finishing with his second-worst career marks in passer rating (91.1) and yards per attempt (7.3).
Speculation about Prescott's standing with the team was fueled when Dallas acquired former No. 3 pick Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers for a fourth-round pick.
Jones previously said the decision to trade for a young quarterback had nothing to do with Prescott or gaining leverage in contract talks.
