Report: Browns' Watson could miss additional weeks with shoulder injury
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson could miss more weeks with a right rotator cuff contusion, a source told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Cabot adds that Watson's injury is considered a "deep" contusion that presents or functions more like a strain.
The 28-year-old, who's already been ruled out for Week 6, won't play again until he's pain-free and can throw normally, according to Cabot. Cleveland will give Watson all the time he needs to rehab the ailment so it's not a lingering issue later in the season.
Watson suffered the injury in the third quarter of the team's Week 3 victory over the Tennessee Titans. He didn't play the following game after experiencing "significant" pain in his throwing shoulder during warmups, per Cabot.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Watson did some light throwing this week but did not expand on how much time the signal-caller will miss.
"As you know, trying to ... treat it day-to-day," Stefanski said. "Treat the injury, day-to-day. He's making progress. He's working very hard but just wasn't ready to get to the level where he could practice and be effective just yet. But he's making progress."
The Browns traded three-first-round picks to the Houston Texans in March of 2022 for Watson before signing him to a fully guaranteed $230-million contract.
Watson has a 5-4 record in nine starts with the Browns, throwing for 1,780 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Quarterback P.J. Walker will get his first start with Cleveland on Sunday.
