Report: Belichick signed multi-year extension before 2023 season
The New England Patriots signed head coach Bill Belichick to a lucrative multi-year contract extension during the offseason, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The contract length and financial terms were not reported.
The 71-year-old has coached the Patriots since 2000, leading the franchise to six Super Bowl titles. Belichick has also been named Coach of the Year three times.
Belichick's position with the Patriots has come under scrutiny amid New England's woeful 1-5 start to the 2023 campaign. The Patriots have made just one playoff appearance over the past three seasons and could miss out for a second consecutive year.
New England enters Sunday's matchup against the Buffalo Bills coming off three straight losses to the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, and Las Vegas Raiders.
Only Don Shula and George Halas have posted more regular-season wins in their careers than Belichick's 299 over his 29 years as a head coach. Belichick (330) sits behind only Shula (347) in total wins including playoff victories.
Prior to being hired by New England, Belichick spent five seasons as coach of the Cleveland Browns (1991-95). He also served as an assistant for the Baltimore Colts, New York Jets, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Detroit Lions.
