The love that head coach Dan Campbell has for Texas A&M runs deep. But it's not enough to pry him away from the Detroit Lions.

The school parted ways with Jimbo Fisher last weekend after he posted a 45-25 record in the span of five-plus years with the program. Campbell would only say that his alma mater "maybe" reached out regarding its head coaching vacancy.

"Certainly, I know some people there and I love my school. That's my alma mater, and I want to do anything I can to help (Texas A&M), but coach for them," Campbell said Friday.

Campbell, 47, played tight end for the Aggies from 1995-99. He recorded 27 receptions for 314 yards and three touchdowns before being selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1999 draft.

After his playing career came to an end, Campbell went into coaching. He was hired by the Lions in January 2021 after serving as an assistant for the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. Detroit has posted a 19-23-1 record under Campbell and currently sits in first place within the NFC North division.

Although Campbell isn't putting his name up for the Texas A&M vacancy, he did share what qualities the next coach will need to have to take the job.

"Certainly, the hire is important, and it needs to be somebody who understands the state of Texas, understands the history of Texas A&M, and can communicate with young people and develop them," Campbell said.
