Report: Jets' Rodgers unlikely to return in 2023

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to return from his Achilles injury this season, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Unless the 4-7 Jets are fighting for a playoff spot later in the month, Rodgers is expected to sit out the remainder of the 2023 campaign, Rapoport adds.

The Jets, who opened Rodgers' 21-day practice window this week, could reportedly activate him to the 53-man roster before Dec. 20 to serve as the emergency quarterback on game day.

The 40-year-old's participation in practice is chiefly a continuation of his rehab on the field, allowing Rodgers to throw to wide receivers instead of trainers.

His return to practice comes only 77 days after he tore his Achilles in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills.

The four-time MVP has thrown out the idea of returning on Dec. 24 against the Washington Commanders, but the Jets are expected to be out of playoff contention by then.

"If we are out of it, I would be surprised if they OK'd that to come back," Rodgers told reporters this week.

New York has struggled on offense without its prized offseason acquisition. The Jets rank 31st in yards per contest and 30th in points per game this season. They're set to take on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13.
