Slayton optimistic about ongoing contract talks with Giants
Wide receiver Darius Slayton said he's "confident" he'll find a resolution with the New York Giants over his contract status as he skips voluntary offseason workouts.
Slayton hasn't been attending the Giants' spring sessions in the hopes of landing a contract extension with the franchise.
"My agent (Michael Perrett) and (general manager Joe Schoen), they're in negotiations. They're talking," Slayton said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "Hopefully, we'll come to a resolution here soon."
Slayton signed a two-year, $12.2-million contract in March 2023. He's set to earn $6.2 million entering the final year of the deal.
The 27-year-old recorded 50 catches for a team-leading 770 yards to go along with four touchdowns last year. Slayton has been one of the more reliable options in the Giants' passing game, leading the club in receiving yards in four of the five seasons since he was drafted in 2019.
Schoen said on Day 2 of the draft that the team's selection of Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick "doesn't affect" Slayton's standing.
Slayton maintains that he's optimistic he can remain with the franchise.
"I've enjoyed my time as a Giant, and I'd like to remain a Giant. Hopefully, that will be the result of this," Slayton said.
Daniel Jones said Wednesday that Slayton is an "important guy to me" as the quarterback continues to recover from a torn ACL that cut his 2023 season short.
Slayton is expected to be a key contributor for a receiving corps that will also feature Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt. It's unclear whether tight end Darren Waller will be back for a second season in New York as he continues to contemplate retirement.
