New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said rookie quarterback Drake Maye has outplayed Jacoby Brissett this summer.

"This is a true competition. ... At this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby," Mayo said on the "The Greg Hill Show" on Monday.

He added: "We have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we'll see where we end up. But those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple of days."

However, Mayo said Sunday that Maye is the "second-best quarterback on (the) roster right now."

Brissett started the team's final preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday night. The veteran exited the contest with a shoulder injury in the first quarter after getting sacked.

Mayo said after the game that Brissett told him he could've played through the injury, but the club is uncertain of the severity of the ailment. Brissett will undergo an MRI scan Monday.

Maye had a terrific first full drive of the game, completing 5 of 6 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown. He finished the contest with 126 yards and a 99.2 passer rating.

Brissett played 27 total snaps in the preseason, completing only five passes for 36 yards with zero scores and one interception.

"I'm happy with the way those guys are battling it out. Hopefully over the next couple days, we can name a starter and get the season rolling," Mayo added, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.

New England kicks off its season on Sept. 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
