The Cleveland Browns are signing quarterback Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The addition comes after quarterback Deshaun Watson sustained a ruptured right Achilles tendon during the team's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this past weekend.

Zappe started eight games for the New England Patriots after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old has passed for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 63.2% of his attempts.

The Western Kentucky product was waived by the Patriots in August and signed to the Chiefs' practice roster a day later.

Cleveland was left with Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback before acquiring Zappe. Thompson-Robinson is dealing with a finger injury that isn't believed to be a long-term issue but could impact his availability for the Browns' matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8. Head coach Kevin Stefanski was unsure if the second-year passer would be able to start Sunday's contest.
