The New Orleans Saints are not planning to rebuild and tear down the roster this offseason, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
New Orleans believes its roster is better than the Saints' current 2-7 record shows, and suggests injuries are a significant reason for their lack of success this campaign, Rapoport adds.
Dennis Allen was fired this week after taking over for longtime head coach Sean Payton in 2022. Special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Darren Rizzi replaced him.
The Saints currently have minus-$62.7 million in cap space for 2025, according to Over The Cap. New Orleans will have to change the roster and adjust current contracts to get under the cap before the new league year.
General manager Mickey Loomis has regularly had to maneuver the salary books to become cap-compliant of late. He traded cornerback Marshon Lattimore at the deadline, who was under contract through the 2026 season.
Quarterback Derek Carr has $50-plus million cap hits in 2025 and 2026 after signing a four-year, $150-million contract in 2022. He's missed three games this season, and he's 2-4 in six starts while throwing for 1,225 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
The Saints will take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
