Report: Giants benching Jones, DeVito expected to be named starter

The New York Giants are benching quarterback Daniel Jones, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Tommy DeVito is expected to be named the new starter, Schefter adds.

The move comes after the 2-8 Giants lost to the Carolina Panthers in overtime. Jones threw two interceptions in the contest while compiling 190 yards with a sub-60% completion percentage. New York just completed its bye week and is set to face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Jones is 3-13 in his last 16 starts dating back to last season. He has 2,335 total yards with 10 touchdowns and nine turnovers in 10 games this campaign.

New York's offense has been among the league's worst this season, ranking last in points per game. Out of 30 quarterbacks who've played at least 220 snaps this season, Jones is 25th in EPA/play, according to Ben Baldwin's database.

The 27-year-old has an injury guarantee tied to his contract. New York would owe Jones $23 million in 2025 if he were to get hurt and not be ready to play for the start of next season.

DeVito started six games for the Giants last year. He went 3-3 as a starter, throwing for 1,296 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Drew Lock is also on the roster.

New York signed Jones to a four-year, $160-million contract in 2023 after he led the team to the divisional round in 2022. He's been with the Giants since they selected him sixth overall out of Duke in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Jones is 24-44-1 in 69 career starts during his NFL career, throwing for 14,582 passing yards with 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.
