Vrabel: Meyer asked if he knew me after working together for 2 years
It apparently wasn't just the opposing players whom Urban Meyer was unfamiliar with during his time as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
While appearing on "ManningCast" on Monday night, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said Meyer asked if he knew him during a 2021 game despite the pair having worked together at Ohio State. Vrabel shared the story after hearing actor Owen Wilson recall a similar situation with Meyer earlier in the show.
"I can relate with Owen Wilson," Vrabel said. "I was listening earlier, and Urban Meyer asked him, 'Do I know you?' ... I was coaching the Titans, he was coaching the Jaguars, and he actually said the same thing to me. I said, 'Yeah, I'm the head coach for the Titans, and I worked for you for two years.'"
Vrabel, currently a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns, served as a defensive line coach under Meyer during the Buckeyes' 2012 and 2013 seasons.
The Jaguars fired Meyer in December 2021 after he compiled a 2-11 record in his lone season with the team. His firing came four days after Vrabel's Titans shut out Jacksonville 20-0.
A report by The Athletic's Jayson Jenks and Mike Sando from March 2022 claimed Meyer was unfamiliar with opposing star players like Aaron Donald and Deebo Samuel during his Jaguars tenure, though Meyer denied that was true.
