Shanahan: Campbell won't be 'part of our team' after TNF exit
San Francisco linebacker De'Vondre Campbell isn't expected to play again for the 49ers this season, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Campbell went to the locker room Thursday night in the second half after saying he didn't want to enter the game.
Shanahan said the 49ers "are working through semantics," adding that Campbell's abrupt exit is "not something you can do and still be part of our team," according to David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard.
Campbell signed a one-year, $5-million contract with the 49ers this offseason. He's played in 13 games this year with 12 starts. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made his season debut Thursday after tearing his Achilles in the Super Bowl. Greenlaw's return moved Campbell out of the starting lineup.
San Francisco tight end George Kittle took offense with Campbell leaving the game, saying it was a "selfish decision."
"I've never been around anybody that's ever done that, and I hope I'm not around anybody that does that again," Kittle told reporters after the game.
He added: "I don't like distractions on the sideline. I think that's ignorant. I think it's just dumb, it's just stupid. It's very immature, and I don't see how you can do something like that to your team."
Campbell spent the previous three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He made first-team All-Pro in 2021 and signed a five-year, $50-million deal the following offseason.
The 31-year-old has 858 tackles in 128 career games.
