49ers owner: Shanahan, Lynch 'not going anywhere'
San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York confirmed head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will return for the 2025 season.
"They're not going anywhere," York told Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard.
The 49ers are 6-10 heading into their season finale after losing to the Detroit Lions on Monday. San Francisco has reached at least the conference championship in three straight years and hasn't had a losing season since going 6-10 in 2020.
The Niners have been decimated by injuries. Star running back Christian McCaffrey started the year on injured reserve and has only suited up in four games. They lost wideout Brandon Aiyuk and Javon Hargrave to season-ending ailments before the year's halfway point, and players such as George Kittle and Trent Williams have also missed multiple contests.
York said the injuries to star players hindered the team's season, but Shanahan and Lynch have "remained steady" throughout the year and continue to be the best leaders going forward.
Shanahan and Lynch were hired to their respective roles in 2017.
San Francisco has to decide on quarterback Brock Purdy's future this offseason. He is eligible for a contract extension after the campaign and has been playing on a four-year, $3.7-million rookie deal since entering the league as a seventh-round pick in 2022.
York hopes Purdy is the team's long-term signal-caller. The 25-year-old is 23-13 as the 49ers' starting quarterback, throwing for 9,518 yards with 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. Purdy ranks ninth in EPA/play out of 35 signal-callers who've played at least 275 snaps this season, according to Ben Baldwin's database.
