Report: League considering Thursday night doubleheaders
Because one bad Thursday night game isn't enough, the league is reportedly considering an expanded Thursday night schedule going forward.
Matthew Futterman and Shalini Ramachandran of the Wall Street Journal are reporting that the NFL is toying with the idea of adding additional Thursday night games to it's current 13-game schedule.
The report indicates that the league could schedule Thursday night doubleheaders, with games being broadcast by networks other than the league-owned NFL Network. The league has even considered selling the games to online outlets like Netflix Inc. or Google Inc.
With the way the schedule is set up now, and factoring in the Thanksgiving games, each team experiences the quick turnaround of a Thursday game once in a season, and an expanded Thursday schedule would mean an unbalanced schedule for some teams.
The NFLPA would have to agree to additional Thursday night games.
