Report: Eagles releasing Darius Slay
The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing cornerback Darius Slay, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
It will be designated a post-June 1 release and save the Eagles $4.3 million against the salary cap, Schefter adds.
Slay was set to make $13.7 million in 2025, and his release will incur a $9.5-million dead cap charge for the Eagles.
He spent the past five seasons in Philadelphia after beginning his career with the Detroit Lions. The 34-year-old made three of his six career Pro Bowls with the Eagles and was a starter for the team's run to Super Bowl LIX this past season.
The Georgia native said he wants to play one more campaign before retiring and is open to returning to the Lions if he can't remain with the Eagles in 2025.
"Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain't, we'll see what I'm doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure," Slay recently said on the "St. Brown Podcast," per NFL.com's Kevin Patra.
He added, "The two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit."
Philadelphia acquired Slay from Detroit in 2020. The Eagles were set to have $22 million in cap space prior to releasing the one-time All-Pro.
Slay started 14 games last season, as well as all four postseason contests. He recorded 13 passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. "Big Play Slay" also intercepted Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love in the team's victory in the wild-card round.
Philadelphia drafted two corners last year - Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean - who both hit the ground running as rookie starters in 2024. The Eagles also rostered Kelee Ringo, Avonte Maddox, and Isaiah Rodgers at the corner position last season, among others.
Maddox and Rodgers are set to hit free agency, along with former All-Pro James Bradberry, who missed all of last season.
