Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon isn't expected to return to action this season due to a foot injury he suffered during the offseason, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Mixon is likely to remain on the reserve list for the rest of the season. He was placed on the non-football injury list at the beginning of training camp in July.

The 29-year-old was projected to have a key role after earning a Pro Bowl nod in his first season with the Texans last year. He rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 scores in 2024. He also caught 39 passes for 309 yards and one touchdown.

General manager Nick Caserio provided an update on Mixon's status during a radio interview with SportsRadio 610's "Payne and Pendergast" on Tuesday.

"It's just a very gray situation," Caserio said, per USA Today's Jacob Camenker. "Joe's worked at it, and there are times when he's made progress, and other times when the progress just kind of stalled."

Houston added insurance at tailback with Mixon sidelined, bringing in veteran Nick Chubb after he spent seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Chubb leads the Texans with 419 rushing yards to go along with two rushing touchdowns and is averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Rookie Woody Marks has also contributed to the rushing attack. The USC product has tallied 538 scrimmage yards and four scores through 10 games.

Adding to the Texans' injury woes, quarterback C.J. Stroud will miss his third consecutive game after being placed in the league's concussion protocol.

The Texans (5-5) host the Buffalo Bills (7-3) on Thursday.
