Report: Chargers to activate Hampton off IR, play MNF vs. Eagles
Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton is expected to play Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
The Chargers listed Hampton and quarterback Justin Herbert as questionable on their final injury report Saturday.
Hampton has missed almost two months after suffering an ankle injury against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 5. He returned to practice last week, but the Chargers opted against activating him from injured reserve ahead of their game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The North Carolina product entered his rookie campaign with an opportunity to contribute immediately. In just five games, Hampton averaged 4.8 yards per carry and rushed for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
The 22-year-old said Friday that he's eager to return to action and feels back to his usual form.
"If it's up to me. I'll always play," Hampton said, per ESPN's Kris Rhim. "But I got to wait for the doc. Whatever they say goes."
The Chargers' running back depth took a hit nearly a month into the regular season when Najee Harris suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. Kimani Vidal has garnered most of the carries for L.A., leading the team with 543 rushing yards and 4.5 yards per carry to go along with three touchdowns. Hampton said he's been impressed by Vidal's production, which includes eclipsing 100 yards in three games since the rookie left the lineup.
"It's amazing just to see him go out there and just produce the way he does," Hampton said. "Me and him gonna be special."
Herbert is also expected to play Monday, despite fracturing his non-throwing hand in last week's 31-14 win over the Raiders. Earlier this week, Herbert underwent surgery to stabilize his left hand with a plate and screw. He said Wednesday he planned to prepare as if he'll play, adding that he'd "see how the next couple of days go," per Rhim.
The Chargers (8-4) will look to hand the Eagles (8-4) their third consecutive loss.
