Browns name Shedeur starting QB for rest of season
Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday that rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will remain the Cleveland Browns' starter for the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old has earned a prolonged opportunity to prove himself as Cleveland's long-awaited solution at quarterback. He owns a 1-2 record as a starter.
"I think that he's constantly and consistently gotten better in each one of these games. ... He's been working very hard, and I feel good about where his development is heading," Stefanski said.
The rookie had his most prolific performance yet Sunday, passing for 364 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception and rushing for another touchdown in a 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Stefanski declined to answer when asked whether he regretted not playing Sanders earlier this season.
"I'm not gonna get into those type of things. Obviously focused on what's in front of us," Stefanski responded, per The Athletic's Zac Jackson.
Cleveland is 3-10 and closes the season with a grueling string of matchups against the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cincinnati Bengals.
Sanders was projected as a first-round selection prior to the 2025 draft, but the Colorado product fell to the fifth round. He began the season buried on the Browns' depth chart behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Sanders got his first start against the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 23 after Gabriel sustained a concussion in a game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Sanders has passed for 769 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, completing 52.4% of his pass attempts.
