Report: Raiders to release Geno Smith
The Las Vegas Raiders plan to release quarterback Geno Smith at the start of the new league year barring a trade, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Las Vegas will create $8 million in salary-cap space by parting ways with the 35-year-old and will take on $18.5 million in dead money, Schefter adds.
Smith will enter free agency a year after the Raiders acquired the two-time Pro Bowler in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Las Vegas signed him to a two-year extension shortly afterward.
Las Vegas finished with a 3-14 record in the 2025 season and went 2-13 in Smith's starts.
He completed 67% of his passes for 3,025 yards and 19 touchdowns with a league-high 17 interceptions in his lone season with Las Vegas.
The West Virginia product developed into a starter with the Seahawks after the team traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. He earned Pro Bowl nods in 2022 and 2023 after becoming the full-time starter.
The Raiders own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and are projected to select former Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Aidan O'Connell is currently the only quarterback under contract on the roster.
