Super Bowl Halftime Show: Bruno Mars shines on the big stage

Made possible by Pepsi

The Super Bowl halftime show is a difficult stage on which to succeed. Football fans want to get back to game action, Twitter pundits want something to make fun of, and it's awfully hard to produce a truly memorable moment considering the storied history of the stage.

Bruno Mars won a lot of people over with an upbeat and genuinely fun performance at MetLife Stadium Sunday.

Bruno Mars began the show alone on stage at a drum kit, clad in gold and not wearing a hat -- an important nugget of information for those fond of prop bets. After dropping a beat, he stood up and was joined by his backing band.

From there, the hit songs began. And they didn't stop until Bruno Mars stepped off the stage. Along the way, he demonstrated some nifty footwork and dance moves that would make Michael Jackson (the halftime performer at 1993's Super Bowl XXVII) proud.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers showed up in their usual state of toplessness, but there were no socks to be seen, mercifully. The alt rockers joined Bruno Mars to perform their 1991 hit "Give It Away."

The show closed with messages from military members to their families and Bruno Mars performing "Just The Way You Are." And, of course, there were fireworks. Lots of fireworks.

The full setlist was as follows:

  1. “Billionaire” (Drum solo)
  2. “Locked Out of Heaven”
  3. “Treasure”
  4. “Runaway Baby”
  5. “Give It Away” with Red Hot Chili Peppers
  6. “Just The Way You Are”
