Popular opinion among NFL fans is that Michael Vick won't have much trouble winning the New York Jets' starting quarterback job in training camp. After all, his competition for the spot, sophomore Geno Smith, endured one of the shakiest rookie seasons of any passer in recent memory.
Not so fast, says ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.
In a video interview on the Jets' official website, Cimini says the Jets "want Geno to be the guy."
"All things being equal, I think Geno will be the guy to start the season," Cimini adds. "He'd have to have a really bad preseason to lose [the starting job]."
Cimini goes on to praise the Jets' acquisition of Vick, saying he believes its essential for teams to carry an experienced backup on their roster.
Smith started all 16 games for the Jets last season, throwing 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. He finished the season with the lowest passer rating of all 37 qualified quarterbacks (at least 14 pass attempts per games played).
