1993 - 49ers trade Joe Montana to Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers made the difficult decision to trade Joe Montana, a player who led the team to four Super Bowl titles, to the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers also sent the Chiefs a third-round draft pick and defensive back David Whitmore in the deal. In return, the 49ers received the Chiefs' first-round pick (no. 18 overall).

Montana missed the entire 1991 season and most of the 1992 season with an elbow injury suffered in the 1990 NFC title game. His absence allowed Steve Young to emerge as the future face of the franchise, prompting Montana to request a trade out of town. Though some 49ers fans fiercely opposed the idea, the 49ers ultimately decided they were better off without "Joe Cool."

Montana was selected to his eighth and final Pro Bowl in his first season with the Chiefs, and he led the team to two comeback wins in the playoffs that season, but he failed to recapture the magic he experienced with the 49ers.

2002 - Texans select David Carr with No. 1 overall pick

The expansion Houston Texans made Fresno State quarterback David Carr the face of their franchise with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft.

Carr never turned into the player the Texans hoped he would, in large part because he played behind one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history. His tendency to hold the ball too long in the pocket didn't help much, either. Carr set an NFL record by being sacked 76 times his rookie season. He also set the record for most fumble recoveries in a season by grabbing 12 of his own fumbles.

Carr's tenure with the Texans ended after the 2006 season. By then, he'd been sacked an astonishing 249 times.
