The St. Louis Rams made headlines in the seventh round of the draft Saturday by selecting former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam with the 249th overall pick in the draft.
Sam generated a tremendous amount of attention in February when he announced to the world that he is gay, a courageous move just a few months prior to the draft. He will become the first openly gay player to step on an NFL field and his addition will likely draw an enormous amount of media attention to St. Louis.
Sam posted 11 1/2 sacks at Missouri last year in a breakout season, and uses a quick first step off the edge to get to the quarterback. His play against the run is also very respectable, which will allow the Rams to use him in more than just pass rushing situations.
The reason Sam fell to the seventh was likely because of a poor performance at the combine and his pro day. His timed results weren't great, and his projected draft slot took a tumble after his performance.
Sam may not project as a starter, but the Rams now have another weapon to help disrupt quarterbacks in a pass-rushing rotation.
