San Francisco 49ers rookie linebacker Morgan Breslin could become the first collegiate football player to receive a payout from a loss of value insurance policy, Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reports.

Once projected as a potential first-day pick, Breslin signed a free-agent deal with the 49ers after going unclaimed in the 2014 NFL Draft. According to Getlin, Breslin took out a loss of value policy during the summer of 2013 that provided him with $2 or $3 million worth of coverage if his draft stock fell due to injury.

Policies similar to Breslin's carry a yearly premium in the $30,000 to $35,000 range, which most players reportedly have to obtain financing for themselves.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Breslin underwent hip surgery in November after missing all but five games last season while at USC. Despite leading the Trojans in sacks (13) and tackles for loss (19.5) in 2012, Breslin was not invited to the Scouting Combine in February.

Chris Larcheveque, executive vice president of International Specialty Insurance, told Yahoo Sports that Breslin's draft drop appeared to be related to his injury, as he was considered one of the premier pass-rushing prospects prior to his surgery.

Wide receiver Marqise Lee, who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round, also purchased a disability and loss of value policy reportedly worth $10 million prior to his final year at USC.

Lee suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during the Trojans' Sept. 23 loss to Arizona State and missed the following three games.
