Colts' Trent Richardson: 'I didn't know the snap count last year'

Indianapolis Colts running back Trent Richardson is ready to put his disappointing 2013 campaign behind him - and acknowledge why it was disappointing in the first place.

The Colts relinquished their first-round pick in this year's draft to acquire Richardson from the Cleveland Browns early last season, and probably wished at some points that they hadn't. Richardson never found a groove and even seemed to get worse as the year progressed. His numbers in the Colts' two playoff games tell the tale: four carries for one yard and one lost fumble.

Richardson is reportedly working hard to improve this offseason. He says having time to actually prepare - rather than unexpectedly switching teams mid-season - will make a big difference.

"I feel way more fluid, even with the timing," Richardson said last week, via Craig Kelley of the Colts' official website. "I didn’t know the snap count last year until the fourth week.

"When I had to step in and start when Ahmad (Bradshaw) went down, it was hard. I didn’t have the chance to learn ‘Why are we doing this? What am I looking at this linebacker, or that linebacker on the backside?’ I just had to know where I was running. I didn’t know the full reasons. With the timing, it’s way easier now."

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson has insisted all along that he'd still make the Richardson trade today, so the team appears ready to provide Richardson with all the help and patience he needs.
