Lions told 295-pound Nick Fairley he didn't weigh enough
First, he was too heavy. Then, too light. Now? Just right.
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley came into training camp listed at 295 pounds - considerably lower than the 320-pound frame he carried at the end of last season - after undergoing a procedure in May to address his sleep apnea.
But after a slimmed-down Fairley showed up at the team's minicamp in June, he's been busy putting some of that extra weight back on.
Head coach Jim Caldwell told the Lions' website he was impressed with how hard Fairley's been working, but that his 295-pound figure was slightly undersized for his position.
We’ve given him a range, his range wasn’t 295, he was far below it at that particular point in time. So the concern is a little bit different in that regard, as it is of today.
Fairley, who's listed at 308 on the club's website, has extra motivation to keep the additional 15-20 pounds off after the Lions declined to pick up his fifth-year option for next season.
I think my body is kind of a 305-type of guy. I feel great. Of course I have to get into a little more shape but that’s camp. That’s what it’s hear for. One thing I’m going to harp on this year is being consistent and showing up each and every day.
The 26-year-old recorded 12 1/2 sacks in 38 games since entering the league in 2011.
